Terena Thomas, a riding program developer and author, holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Psychology from the University of Colorado. Research proving the effectiveness of her riding program was done through CU. She is a member of the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association and certified through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). Successfully using horse interventions to help heal emotionally disturbed children since 1988, her specialized skills in dealing with high risk and violent youth have enabled her to design this powerfully effective program. This dedicated young woman is a Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor with special emphasis on animals and children. Terena is the founder of Hooves for the Heart, LLC. an equestrian program for challenging children in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Winning numerous awards in Western and English equitation, She is also an accomplished rider in cross country jumping, dressage, horsemanship, reining and trail. Terena and her horse, Quest, were the 1991 Colorado State Champions in trail competition. Her love of horses and children creates an atmosphere of respect and honor for all living creatures.
Terena believes we can make a difference with these tough kids and created this dynamic program to make it happen. She has taught through-out the US and southern Australia, her vision to help the children is contagious! Catch it!

Hooves for the Heart is a therapeutic horseback riding program in Colorado where minds are healed through the intervention of equine companions. This course has been developed over 12 years and has been used as part of the healing for over 1000 emotionally disturbed children.
Children suffering from any of the following problems have shown progress after completing the therapeutic riding:
